Students Teachers and Student Aides

Recently, I had a freshman student from a local college as an aide. I
used to have her as a student and she plans to become an art teacher. As
part of one of her classes, she was to spend 20 hours with me. She is a
delightful person and great with the kids (grades 1-5). She will make a
good colleague.
She has a fashion statement which was "displeasing" to one of my
principals---a pierced eyebrow. The principal asked that I talk with her
about it. It had not been a problem for me or the kids, but I did talk with
her about it, and explained that it may be a problem down the road. She
told me she'd lost a job because of it the day before. I did not ask her to
remove it. She's an 18 yr. old putting in 20 hours. Our conversation was a
good one, but I found that I resented what the pricipal had asked me to do.
I felt like an old you-know-what having to bring it up. Me, who wears
jeans and tennies to work in at school.
This probably gets back to an old topic and I apologize for that. What
are your expectations in that area for an aide and student teacher?
Another question: Do you feel that the student teachers who have worked
with you were prepared for it?
Student teachers are great. They challenge you.
