I've done a drawing project with 7th graders where I give them a list of
topics to choose from: a birthday party, report card day, a vacation, a
robbery, and so on. Their task is to do a drawing that will communicate
that one of these events has happened - but without any words. Just
visual clues. It is sort of like a mystery - they need to think of every
little detail that would need to be there in order to show what has
happened.
