Gigi:Egyptian Mummy Cases

I first tried the Egyptian mummy cases with my fifth graders last year
and couldn't wait to do it again this year.
First I show the students a short, 25 min. video on King Tut. It tells a
bit about Egypt, the discovery of the tomb by Howard Clark, the contents
etc. (This always amazes them because we almost never watch a video in art
class.) We usually have enough time in this same class period to discuss
the patterns and designs unique to Egyptian style.
The students worked in groups of three or four.(Working in groups is
interesting in itself!) One member of the group lays down on a large piece
of Decoral paper (or butcher paper) and the rest of the group trace 'out
and around' them to get the case form. The form is cut out and then, using
handouts that include hyeroglyphics, sybols, gods and goddesses and
several books from our school library, the groups lay out the design for
their cases.
Next we painted with tempera using large and small brushes. When the
painting is complete, we use metallic paper to further enhance the design.
This year I laminated the mummy cases and then students added "jewels."
Something additional that is fun is having the groups create a name for
their king or queen. Sometimes the kids have combined parts of names of the
group members. I haven'ts done this, but I think it would be fun to work
with a classroom teacher and have the kids write about the king or queen.
Last year, when I first tried the cases, we had a family reading night and
the theme was Egypt. That's when I knew it was time to get off my file and
use it!
There are lots of things you could do with Hieroglyphics,too, such as
designing a cartouche. I haven't tried this, but I think having the kids do
a self-portrait in Egytian style would be a nifty project.
The mummy cases are about 5 feet tall. Because it's a group project,
several different things happen after it's taken down from display. Some
groups give it to me for the art room. Sometimes they draw straws.
Regardless, I take a photograph of everyone with their mummy case and make
sure everyone gets a copy so they all have something.
