Find the book "Tar Beach" by Faith Ringgold". Lots of ideas for cityscapes,
fantasy, etc. She uses quilting in her art.....perhaps they can make quilt
squares to decorate the border of their picture. I did a lesson combining
Ringgold and Jacob Lawrence. The children were inspired by "The Parade" by
Lawrence. They made collages of a parade with a cityscape in background. I
xeroxed their class photos and they inserted their own faces on bodies...some
swapped their photo copies with friends to add photos to their art a la Romare
Bearden. This lesson was taught in segments (one artist at a time) to third
graders and the results were great.
