Dear Deb, I teach art 4 days a week at a private school. On my day off I
sometimes go to other schools and give a workshop. The kids love it, I
teach Asian brush painting, I bring my own supplies etc. Usually all goes
well and when the teacher stays in the room the kids are better behaved.
However, the kids are so happy to have an art class that they are usually
attentive and poor behavior is actually misplaced enthusiasm. I feel the
best situation is for the school to have a real art teacher with regular
lessons. If this is not possible, It's a good idea to have an art
specialist come in and give a workshop, this gives students who are
inclined towards the arts some exposure to the profession. It's not the
same when the class teacher does art, unless they have an afinity for
it.Sincerely, Diane L
