One year as a project in Art 3 and 4...I bought a bunch of books at 10
cents a piece and gave one to each student with the message.".This is your
final project...take this book and create a work of art out of it." The
range of projects was incredible. One student used the covers to open up
to a diaroma of a landscape which was a collage ...real rocks and a wooden
fence. Another used the pages to recover the book from which she made a
jewelry box. Others rewrote parts of the book. Some painted on the pages ,
some added photomontage...Some cut the insides of the pages out, glued the
edges together to form a box to hold treasures.. One was a diary of a trip
to Philmont, Boy Scout ranch. One book was covered with metal and nailed
shut. The students loved this project. Any class who sees the few books
that remain in my storeroom want to do it. Another way to creatively
re-cycle. HeidiMcElroy
