I am a student teacher this semester and I have just finished a
lesson with a first and second grade multiage group about the book "The
Snowy Day", just as someone else mentioned. I had the students notice the
footsteps and other tracks made in the snow and also how the illustrator
created his pictures using collage. We talked about the footprints and what
the term collage means. I then had them use sponges and light blue tempera
paint to create various tacks in the snow(the white paper). During the
following class they cut different shapes out of construction paper to make
houses, trees, people, sleds, etc. and glued them onto their paper. The
results were very nice. some students even had shapes popping off the page.
There is a good book that has several lessons based on childrens is called Art Activities with Award Winning Picture Books by
Judy Heintz. It is for the younger elementary grades. It is a great
book!!! Good luck!! Courtney
