My experience with this is this:
Lots of drawing, painting, more drawing, more painting.
Think of ways to get out of their way.
Leave them alone.
Let them draw more.
Let them paint more.
The classroom teachers never lets them paint. Too messy.
They don't get to paint at home. Too messy.
You said: "Their understanding of a subject seems to
outpace their hands on abilities."
Your observation is consistent with my experience. My conclusion: give them
more hands-on experiences. Learning comes through repetition.
