Many years ago in a study group we talked of how the role of immigrants has
changed. The US used to be called a "melting pot", where your goal was to
adapt yourself to the culture as quickly as possible and leave behind the
Now we are more like a "salad bowl" where each retains the qualities of the
old ways and contributes them to the flavor of the total culture. In the
light of this discussion, however, it is probably worth noting the presence
of a "salad dressing" (common language, etc.) which melds the
conglomeration into a richly flavored whole.
