I have made Ukranian eggs in a crafts class for several years. The
person who taught me connected me with the Surma people. One further tip
she gave me which I have found very useful. The kistka ( the tool used to
apply the wax) can sometimes become clogged with carbon from the candle in
which you heat it or hardened wax. A short piece of the smallest steel
guitar string available is just the right size to force through the tiny
hole in the heated kistka and clear it so the wax can again flow smoothly.
I don't usually blow the eggs either, simply let nature dry the
yolk inside. Sometimes they small a little around July or August in my
storage cupboard, but I'm not in school then for it to bother me so it
doesn't really matter. One year one did rot and explode. Must be the evil
was particularly strong that year. We just made more eggs the next!
