Dear Fellow Art Teachers:
I can simplfy in the following way. I begin to believe that we need to
live our own culture and steal others only at our own peril.If indeed there
are common denominators in diverse cultures, they will sort themselves out
in time. It is perhaps best to leave art history/culture to an academic
pursuit- not production one. Lord Elgin should not be a model for art
teachers.
There may well be an eternal line of potters and participation in that
tradition is certainly a wonderful thing. I would not however confuse this
production with the classroom project attempting to create a ritual indian
animal mask. gjw
