art ed?

The question was posed: "What is art education?" My answer is something
like this: What we do as teachers is to help the student to achieve a
level of thinking where they can begin to live "artistically." Art ed should
be for all students, those proficient in creating art and those not. The
goal should be to help them develop the ability to make aesthetic judgments.
This is along the lines of the "gesamtkunstwerk," the total work of art.
Life as art. If we produce economists, factory workers, medical technicians,
and maybe a few artists who can live "artfully," then we have succeeded.
