In addition, students also evaluate on another list of criteria that
include such things as innovation, workmanship, aesthics etc. Each of
them also creates a drawing of each product they create. Oh, by the way,
I teach ceramics or pottery in a high school. The students have been
able to refer to the elements and principles in a meaningful way. They
talk about their work in many terms as well as in terms of the elements
and principles.
I also do a final discussion with each of them about their finished
products and include comments for directions they may wish to go for
future work.
It all seems to work. The conditions for self-assessment are very
important to me and I continue to try new ways of getting my students to
recognize the qualities of their work, the ideas the use and the
relationship of their work to that of artists in the field and peers.
