Kathleen, I hope you have a kiln!
Our students, many of whom have little idea of the nature of clay
think chimes are a great idea but end up making "wind clunks".
No seriously, why not explore it through natural material which make
nice sounds when bumped together, bambo, strips of hardwood, sticks
etc then have the children make simple coils and strips of clay. Try
making thin strips with a variety of holes in them.
They will not know how successful they are until the work is high
fired. Then they can make more effecient pieces knowing which designs
work best.
