Dear Annella -- These are good questions on "censorship." In general,
I show Master works of art in my classroom. The nudity in master art works
is not pornography, and I don't generally let parents or even Principals
decide what is right for my classroom. I show high quality work to
demonstrate concepts in the curriculum. I feel strongly that it is my re-
sponsibility as an art professional to use my education and expertise to
choose the exemplars for my students. O.K., that was "in general."
If I were not in a tenured teaching position, & was in a situation that
required prudence, I'd do well to serve with prudence. Looking at the
individual school handbook is helpful. What are the rules already set down?
Younger children probably will not be studying Rennaissance paintings,
anyway. If rules have not been set, you have more freedom.
The standards are not enforced, except for parents calling your Principal
which will be a pain if your Principal supports parents more than teachers.
I've been successful showing nudes to many groups of children -- based on
beauty, not clothing or no clothing. Bravo to museums -- if they display
it, I can use that for support. -- Jeannie Langan
