My brief slant on the subject:

Too much of the software is bent on reproducing the effects of
other media; e.g., givimg a digitally simulated glob of paint a more
realistic shadow a a gleam of wetness. Each new (or old) medium should be
exploited for the properties which make it unique. The challenge of the
digital medium is to find its personality and its strengths and not turn it
into a cliche, as in the ubiquitous morphing faces in television
commercials.
