I have taught art for 20 years. A program that I started in my school
which I am very proud of was Teaching Adaptive Art. In this class I
taught high school students how to teach disabled students art projects.
I then would supervise the class for the next 4 days as these students
actually taught mentally and physically challenged students. Through
this program many students not only learned and experienced art together
they also learned to appreciate each other for who and what each of them were. Many
great friendships were developed out of this art experience. Several of
the students from this class have gone on to be special education
teachers, or working with the disabled in some form or another.
Unfortunately the director of Special Education decided that this would
be one of the easiest programs to cut. So after 10 successful years my
pride and joy is gone. It did how ever serve a great purpose of sharing
art with the disabled.
