Wow Denise, and in Marin County, I grew up in Novato and Lucas Valley,
that is truly sad.
First, is a corporate sponsor available to help fund your art program

I do not have an art budget, I teach at a private Catholic School in

So I have art supplies on the school supply list by class (, and I hunt
at Walmart and Target to determine what they can easily bring. The
teachers gather the Art Supplies and bring them to me the first week of
class, I do not have the students keep them, they are for everyone and I
use them accordingly:

For instance:

1st grade 12 pencils
                         2 erasers
2nd grade 8 count crayola water color
                        2 sharpies
                        2 fine point sharpies
3rd grade 24 count crayola colored pencils

My heart goes out to you in your situation. I teach art at an elementary
in Texas, grades 4, 5 and 6. We used to get around $1000 a year for art
for 850 students. Now it is an ask for it and we will approve it if we
have the money ...kind of situation, plus supplies we get from the
parents at the beginning of the year and from local businesses. No
problems so far, but we are careful to document what we need and produce
results with whatever we ask for. Good Luck.

I'd love some information from you all. Our district is in impasse now
because we haven't had a new contract in over three years, and we can't
seem to work with the district. One of the things that bothers me is
the large amount allotted for supplies, money which never hits the art
department. We do not get one thin dime for our classes. So I'm going
to speak to the board next week, and I would love to know what other
districts are getting for their classes, especially California

Can you help?

Denise in Novato
