Re: [teacherartexchange] Tracking attendance and supplies in photo class

First off, I wouldn't let those who sneak off leave the classroom
anymore. Period. Leaving the classroom for any reason is a privilege
and those who can't be trusted cannot leave. I have camera check out
as well, and I physically hand the camera to a student, with charged
batteries & an SD card. They sign a card with the # of the camera they
are checking out. Do this at the beginning of class before things get
hectic. I go over the camera check out at the beginning of each class
to keep students accountable for them. My sign out sheet is by the
doorway on a clipboard. Students write their name, time left, time
returned, & destination. No sign in/out means no daily points. They
know that periodically I will go check on them to make sure that they
are where they say they will be. Occasionally I'll have my principal
do this for me as well (I pre-arrange dates he will do this). The
penalty for not being where they are supposed to be is they are not
allowed out of the classroom until I say they can again. By having a
sheet by the doorway I can also keep track of who is doing what, and
if they are producing an appropriate amount/quality of work for their
time out of the classroom. Another alternative is to just stop all
students from leaving the classroom until you can trust that ALL of
them can remain on task. If there are no consequences for students not
signing out many of them just won't do it.
