Subject: Re: Pottery/tile question

I did a large tile/mosaic project at a public school last year. I was hired as an
artist to design the project with student participation, but I also do not like to give a
kid a blank tile and have them paint it. I wanted more, so I hired a ceramic specialist
and together we came up with the idea of having all the kids make fish. we had them lay
out a slab of clay and trace around a template of a fish. we had many templates to choose
from. Once the fish was cut out, we gave them all sorts of items to press into the fish
creating various patterns and indentations. They could add clay if they wanted for eyes,
lips, etc. They they glazed them and I placed them in the mosaic. They are absolutely
gorgeous. I have done several mosaic projects with kids and I feel it is best to have
them create sections of the mosaic and an adult finish it off. Mortar is messy and dries
fast. There's lots of ways kids can be involved without actually doing the mosaic lay in.
This is just based on my experience. I live in Southern California where I have to work
very fast when laying in a mosaic, as it will dry within 20 minutes in the sun so I can't
have kids doing it, but I have them plan it, lay out tiles on the tables and show me
their ideas, etc.
Attached is a photo of a fish tile and the finished mosaic.
Good luck. Katrina
p.s. I tried sending the photos, but the exchange won't allow attachments. I am happy to send you photos if you give me your email address. -Katrina
