Any ideas? I'm meeting with his mom this week.

Would it be an option to have his mom (or another family member) do a
weaving project with him? I suspect that the pattern skills learned in simple
weaving serve as a foundation for a lot of other learning (math for example).
I had a child make up work once with the help of a parent...it helped them
both appreciate the skills I was working on.
If that is not an option how about a report on the connection between
weaving and computers. (The first "computer languages" were devised to make
jaquard patterns with the early power looms in the 1700's) or maybe the Asante
weavers who are mostly men and boys would make a good subject. If he does a
report of some kind, have him share his learning with the class.
