[teacherartexchange] How to be ghetto?

How funny is this? I asked my new group of middle schoolers to
describe their favorite teacher. Many picked the 7th/8th grade math
teacher at this school. I've actually never met her, but I just had to
after I read what they wrote. They wrote that they love her because
she's "ghetto." LOL. So I told her, and she laughed, and right away I
could tell that she had the quality I've been searching for. She knows
how to talk like them and relate to them. I can tell that she's tough,
but that she uses humor to gain their respect. Apparently when they
act up, she says, "Don't make me get ghetto on you!" So, perhaps I
need to toughen up my image. I mean, I know a bit of the hip hop
lingo, and I know some artists, but maybe I need to freshen up and
definitely come up with some new projects relating to hip hop. Maybe
even a quote from Snoop Dog from time to time? LOL! I really want to
relate to them and make this an enjoyable class for them. Any
resources for my research you could recommend? I think that I might
even ask this teacher if I could observe her one day or talk to her
about how she handles the kids. I'm going to end this year on a
high...I need to!
