I don't even talk about art on the first day. I either do
introductions/interviews where one student interviews the other across the table. Then after a
few minutes we go around and find out a bit about everyone. This way I get to
know them a bit and I get my seating chart down. I also find out who's really
into art the very first day too.
I sometimes do the toilet paper bit. IT goes over real well in M.S. I hand
out a roll of toilet paper and tell students to take some toilet paper.
That's all the info I give. After all has taken I tell them to count the individual
sheets and that's how many things about themselves they have to tell the
class. It's pretty funny and remember it's all in how you set it up. I'm pretty
funny with it and they laugh at my intro for it and I've already started to win
them over with humor.
Remember you're a bit of performer up there as well.
