Carolyn,
Of the masters how about some of my favs. Minor White, Tina Modotti, and
Charles
Sheeler and of course Ed Weston.
  
When I taught photo I also liked to show some commercial photographers that I
personally worked with or were familiar with when I was an art director. Many
kids liked to see this kind of work as it leads to discussions about possible
careers. Try these.
James Salzano (salzanophoto.com) and Lee Crum. Both are wonderful portrait
commercial photographers
