I just looked at this site
http://www.cs.vassar.edu/~capriest/fingerloop.html and they reference
another Japanese technique called kute-uchi (hand-held) in the bibliography.
This site has photos of many pattern variations, but no instructions.
However it concludes with an annotated bibliography.
