It is interesting to me that this is a high school discussion. I'm
having a lot of this at the elementary level. Students are sometimes
afraid to try because they are so self critical. Every year I spend a
lot of time talking about how it is okay to make mistakes in art. In
fact, I encourage it! I do tell them that the only mistake they can
make is talking when I'm talking or showing disrespect for me, their
peers, or our artroom. But that as far as their art work, there are no
mistakes, just new directions.
