I've used wintergreen oil for years - strong smell, but safer than
acetone. We used it at Tamarind Institute to transfer Xeroxes on to
ball-grained aluminum litho plates, which have a slight texture. Fresh
Xeroxes work best - 1-2 hours old. I've never tried it on canvas,
though.
