I sympathize but it couldv'e been worse.
I offered myself once in a fundraiser. You know, an afternoon of lunch for
them and a friend to see the movie Fantasia at the IMAX with the Art Teacher!
No one bid anything. . . .now that hurts!
Yours doesn't sound so personal. It could be that no one needed a
headboard. If they are well to do they probably all spent a good deal on
the ones they have.
I would go easy on yourself, you fulfilled your obligation.
