Okay: look at the total picture. Children that are pulled out of my class
for reading remedial or math tutoring or because they haven't finished their
assignments might be real good in the art room and need the relief of doing
something creative instead of bookwork, but they still need a good basic
background in reading and math. Many of their parents don't have the time,
effort or IQ to help them. How will they know how to read to fill out an
application for employment or read the booklet to get a driver's license
without these basics?
I gave two art tests to a child in fourth grade. One was on clay
vocabulary and the other was on a blurb about Romare Bearden. He failed them
miserably because he couldn't read the questions!
