Okay, this was cool! Mary Azarian, 1999 Caldecott Medal winner for her woodcut illustrations in the book "Snowflake Bentley," visited my school on March 21, 2002. She met with our middle school students and demonstrated her woodcarving and printmaking techniques.
She also talked about the steps involved in having a children's book published, answered all of the wonderful questions that the kids had for her, let them look at her tools and other materials, and allowed me to photograph her and take notes as she worked.
There are LOTS of pictures and the page may be slow to load, but I was so pleased with how some of the photos turned out that I didn't want to reduce their size too much!
Ms. Azarian was in our area to participate in an annual event known as The Virginia Festival of the Book, and our librarian arranged her visit. She was visiting several schools, and we were lucky enough to be one of them!
