Re: Rainbow Projects

Date: Sun Mar 17 2002 - 07:17:59 PST

Last year I did a unit on Australia and had 2nd graders do Rainbow Bird hats
based on a book entitled, The Rainbow Bird, which is an Aboriginal folk tale.
Fold a 12"x18" construction paper in half. Draw a large bird body and head
shape on one side (no wings). Cut out, leaving the fold intact. Cut a few
slits in the back part of the bird body and staple together to form a "hat"
shape. Fold a 9"x12" piece of construction paper in half. Draw a wing shape
on one side and cut out to make 2 wings. Make tabs on wings and attach to
body of bird. Cut feathers out of various rainbow colors of const. paper and
glue to bird and wings. Draw eyes, beak and other designs on bird head and
body. The kids loved this project and they hung from the art room ceiling for
most of the school year (although we first allowed time for the kids to wear
them in class). Thanks go to my teaching partner, JoAnHeiman for this idea!
