Yesterday l had an obsv. by my principal. Im a new teacher. The students had
made scratchboards for their still life drawings, 3rd grade, very basic still
life drawing. I had thought that making the scratchboards would be a fun way
of showing off the practice and learning we had accomplished in drawing. The
kids were psyched about making and using the boards, I had shown an example.
After a quick review, they started with the boards and were completely
disappointed. Somehow these were not the "magic boards" they had thought. I
encouraged them to continue exploring what they COULD do with the board...I
lost them. I tried wider scratching sticks, encouraging students to draw go. Once they realized that they couldnt erase it was over. We
then discussed the "happy" mistake, how it could be changed into something
else, something special. Unfortunately the super came in during that time.
sigh. what a day. I actually didnt think the whole thing went kapootz until
the principal walked by me later that day and said "tough break". ooooh.
