Re: Advice on Commissioned Work

Date: Sat Mar 31 2001 - 06:58:04 PST

What kind of work is involved in this commission, mural, sculpture? Have you
seen anything similar in your area? You could investigate the costs. Is it to
be public art? How much will your materials cost? How much do you make an
hour as a teacher (figure it out without all the extra just your in-school
hours and up it) How long do you estimate the project will last? Will you
need any technical help i.e. installation, cranes etc.?

I used to be a corporate art consultant in the LA area for approx. 15 years.
So I have some experience with what you need. However different areas will
support different projects and budgets. Some other questions you need to ask
yourself or your client are: does the client have a budget? What is their
time frame, etc.You don't want to go in and blow them away with something
they weren't expecting. However don't see yourself short. If you describe in
detail what you are proposing, possibly someone else on the artednet will be
able to give you an idea.

Let me know a little more info and perhaps I can help a little more.
