Re: Grading for Elementary Art

Like our PE grades, fine arts are graded excellent, satisfactory, needs
improvement and unsatisfactory. A like grade is given for citizenship. The
child centered approach to fine arts deals primarily with process, making
quantifiable outcomes irrelevant. This is not to say that the work is
irrelevant because it is not quantified. Fine arts purpose in our school
encourages the student to self expression within developmentally appropriate
confines. The subjective nature of evaluating art makes grading pretty
straightforward, so we are pretty much grading on participation. This seems
appropriate... our purpose is to have the students tell us what is going on
by their expression... not return a product based on an academic lesson.
