As a "designer" since, well-----many moons ago, I define this term to my
students as follows.
Design is the process of "Problem Solving".
It can reflect the problem of a client or a basic composition choice in
visualizing something. It can be 2D or 3D. Fine artists possess design
skills to produce artwork. However, Designers are skilled in solving problems
on a larger level. They research, compare, analyse, create, produce and
present work as a solution to a given problem.
I do not consider myself to be a painter or a sculptor. I am a designer who
teaches art at the high school level. I look at my objectives and design
lessons and projects that would best teach concepts and exemplify processes.
I do not make art for arts sake- but always create pieces or installations
for a reason or purpose. I have a broad range of mediums and formats from
which I work and experiment often with unfamiliar materials. My focus is
career based or EXTERNAL, where as a painter may have more of an "intrinsic"
attitude towards his /her work.
