I always do landscapes and environmental art with 4th graders as it
integrates with their geology unit and biomes which they study in grade 4
science.

We looked at landscape art. I have done several lessons with them,
landscapes using overlapping and scale, landscapes using horizon line and
vanishing point and collage landscapes. With every lesson we do more detail.
In the spring I will be taking them out to do drawing and water color
outside. They love going outside and the previous lessons really prepare
them. I also let them draw around the school. They love any opportunity to
get out of the class room (as do I) and they really respect the privilage.
Also, it lets people who would not normally see them working, do what they do
best!

Hope this helps. Another thing I did was really look at books that taught
landscape drawing/painting. These how-to books are great as they really
break things down and maybe give me ideas for teaching something in a way I
had not thought of before. There are so many different methods...it really
helps. Sort of like cooking...there are a million chocolate chip cookies
recipes....you can pick, choose or combine what works for you...and you still
get a fantastic chocolate chip cookie!

Good Luck!
