Re: Teaching the merits of abstract art

Date: Sat Mar 10 2001 - 15:10:43 PST

I introduce abstract to my kindergarterners by doing a picture of a lion in
crayon and coloring in with watercolors. We look at several prints of
animals that progress from very realistic to abstract. Then we draw the lion
together and divide it up into sections using straight or curved lines. Each
section is filled in with a different types of lines or shapes. Then each
section is painted different colors. Very successful. In fact, one of my
second graders entered his picture done in kindergarten in Reflections this
year and won first place in school and at the next level. I havent' heard how
much further it went. JH
