For all you middle school art teachers- I did a project on Judy Chicago's
"dinner party" with my 8th graders. It was wonderful! The students made
place settings out of paper-mache. (Dinner plate, salad plate and cup).
Once the pieces were made, I assigned them the task of researching one of 7
pre-selected artists. Then they were to paint images representing their
artist on their dinnerware. 8th graders were required to submit a 1 page
type wriiten report on their artist along with their painted -place setting.
Requirements were that all pieces must coordinate with each other. The salad
plate was to incorporate the artists name. The cup and dinner plate had
representational images. I displayed the entire class' art work on a huge
table that was set for dinner w/tablecloth and all. A description of the
lesson was displayed next to the table. It was a very dynamic exhibit of the
