I really don't think you should be concerned with the final projects but the
mini-projects that lead up to them. Decide what makes a "good drawing".
With my beginning art1 students I examine the elements and principles of art
and do "mini" drawings exemplifying each. They will learn to make a balanced
composition, develop a broad range of values, learn various ways of using
line through contour drawings, show their understanding of how to create
space through both natural and linear perspective etc. The first 5 are spent
on observational drawings in graphite and or marker. 6th week, students
develop and imaginary composition focusing on creating a foreground, middle
ground and background in graphite. My 7,8,and 9th week, my kids learn 1 and
2 pt perspective. If there is any time left, I will assign a project that
will encompass all of what they should have learned. This final project
gives me a good idea of those students who will be returning for a Art 2
class.
