Last year at the NAEA conference Bunki and I were in a workshop called "A Parade of Drawing Strategies" or something like that. Wish I could remember the name of the presenter--the workshop was excellent!
We started our parade with a drawing of ourselves holding a banner from memory, then added a figure from a written description, then one from "Where the Wild things Are", then a model in a robot costume, then a modified blind contour drawing of a model, then a figure developed from an actual shell (observation) and finished up with "Art from Art"--a figure on horseback from an art history model. At each step of the way the presenter asked us to make notes about how each drawing strategy made us feel. What I learned from the experience reinforced a long-held belief--that it's good to have something to look at, but also the freedom to change, add, adapt to make the drawing our own. As we viewed each other's drawings around the room we saw a variety of drawing abilities, but also great interpretation of the various stimuli.
