I do tie-dye with thrid graders. I have them do the rubber bands on week.
everyone gets about ten rubber bands and I demo how to grab the fabric and
wrap the bands. The next week I have prepared lage pots of dye on each table
with a lot of newspaper. I have children stand a the tables....4 to each
table. I play "like musical chairs". When the music stops, (oh I have them
all wear rubber gloves) they rotate to another table. After they have been
at tall tables, they go to the first table they were at and remove the bands
in the garbage cans (at each table ) I have newspaper layed on the floor
around the classroom. The studnets bring their shirts to the newspaper and
lay them on the floor. It is very organized and works out well. I have done
this outside in some years, yet the weather must be right and it is much
harder to control the students when they are finished. I have very little
trouble with this activity if the students understand the problems which
could arise if they fool around and "drip". good luck. hope this helped.
robin. (oh, names with permanent marker before dyeing.
