"Arts take a beating in college admission" was the headline I was greeted
with in my Sunday morning front page newpaper! Seems like the " powers that
be" (Board of Regents) have decided that they want our students "to have a
solid academic base" (they don't already???) so high school students will
have to take 19 credits of academic classes "such as math and history" to get
into a state university. This will force schools to make major shifts in
scheduling to fit in all these requirements. Arts will be pushed out because
of time-constraints.
Get this! Classes such as computer science, broadcasting, dance or art, inclu
ding AP art courses won't count. What ever happened to the well-rounded
student?? Here we go again! Those of you who survived the 1960-70 's arts
cutback, remember the jargon????
Time constraints will knock out electives such as the arts! To quote: "
This is not a criticism of those who take art classes, but we're not
measuring creativity....We're measuring whether a person is prepared to do
well in college".
I wish I could remind some of these "people" that Einstein was a creative
thinker....he pushed beyond what is known, into the unknown. Do they think
we just twiddle our thumbs in an art class? What about decision-making
skills we use? Or, pushing the envelope to see what is not there;
Encouraging our students to think beyond their known boundaries to create a
NEW thing?
Argggggh! I am so mad right now, I feel like throwing my breakfast omelet at
them!!!
Florida teachers, what do you think?
