Regarding the backpack issue and trust that Anne C noted, I make all my
students leave their backpacks outside the room. Purses, wallets,
calculaters, etc. may come in, but after my first two years of having things
stolen, backpacks stay outside the room. I have had the support of my
pricipals for this, and after 12 years (and 6 different prinicipals)there
has never been a problem. Ocassionally, we will find a backpack or two
thrown in the trash can outside, but none have ever been removed. I guess
we have an honest school where backpacks are concerned, just not art
supplies!!!!!!

Hi all,
Just 8 days away from spring break and it's snowing in N. Michigan.
Despite the weather, spring fever is bursting and one of its aspects is
that stealing picks up. I'm getting hit harder than usual due to my
situation with needing supplies out of my closet and having to send kids
with my keys. Personal things are getting swiped so I'm getting a lock
on one of my file cabinets for personal belongings. The other issue is
petty vandalism and thievery off my cart. I'm thinking of banning
backpacks. What do you think about this?
Would it show distrust and result in resentment?
