They aren't offended by the stuff that goes with the unit, but if I try some Jazz, Classical, or Big Band stuff etc. at random, they freak. What kinds of music works well and do you play it all the time or as a reward? Just curious.
Dear Clark,
I play music whenever it seems appropriate, for example: African music when doing projects inspired by African art (or anytime since we all like the percussion), "Music for the Classroom," (it has the same 60 beat per min. piano music tempo throughout, designed to relax and slow the heartbeat) I use in k, 1, and 2 - they love it! I play classical music when any class is working well, they like the background noise, and for classes that can handle a little more excitement, I'll play more contemporary or upbeat stuff like The Dave Matthews Band, Motown (which has the side effect of dancing!), and the new Carlos Santana "Supernatural." I keep it positive in the classroom.
Now, for getting them not to freak. There is a rule, "Unless it is offensive to your beliefs, experience the music without complaint," Of course, if too many complain, or someone is completely obnoxious we just turn it off. In return for being tolerant, any student who puts his/her name in a drawing, can bring in "suitable" music. When the class earns four "smileys" I do a drawing (I like the idea of the dollars to improve the "good" students' chances). Of course, sometimes it backfires, like "Kid Rock," even without swear words was a bit aggressive for class!!!
