Linda,
I use a behavior mod technique that I picked up from a Kutztown art
conference and it works well. I give each table I "catch" following the art
room rules and doing their best work (effort) an "art award".
I made these using small reproductions, labelling the artist name and title
and the words "Art Award" at the top. Periodically during a class, I will
put an award on a table for the above efforts. If someone at the table
breaks a rule, I take one back. I also give table awards at the beginning
of class when I am questioning them about the material learned the week
prior. Every right answer earns an award. And at the end of class for the
first quiet, clean table. You should see the effort I get for these!
The end result is that, at the end of class, the table with the most art
awards lines up first and each persons at that table gets (are you ready for
this?) a sticker! Yes, a sticker! they love them and work hard for them-
even my 6th graders.
This works well. In addition, I have consequences for rule-breaking that
are simple and effective. I posted earlier on this list that I use Reality
Therapy as my discipline approach and it has proven very effective for many
years.
Hope this helps.
