I do not allow backpacks, coats, or books in my room. Mostly due to lack of
appropriate storage space and the mess usually involved in the room, but
also due to the problems that you are experiencing. Although stealing has
never been a major issue, it does occur. The "hot" item now seems to be my
drawing pencils. I plan to start having students show me empty pockets to
get out of the art room.
No, I do not think this is excessive. If it happens, you have a reason to
react as you do.
