i just got back from a wonderful lecture by bell hooks. she is an amazing person, an author, feminist, social critic --- and lots more.
_teaching to transgress_ and _art on my mind_ are two of her titles that are great reads for art educators; she has also written more recently _all about love_ which sounds very inspiring, uplifting, and profound. her children's book, _happy to be nappy_ is fantastic, too! you can find all these titles on amazon.com
what moved me so much about her talk tonight was her description of the power of beauty. as art teachers we are able to help our students find, explore, and create beauty. these abilities, according to hooks, are extremely important for overcoming adversity and in maintaining a positive and hopeful outlook in spite of demoralizing events that take place in our world. she talked about how the study of beauty (aesthetics) has been offered primarily to only the elite of our society and of the consequences of denying this knowledge to so many people. she also spoke of the mistaken idea that the underprivileged should be limited to exposure of things that perform some concretely useful function...
i thought about my most cherished experiences with beauty and how much i rely on them in my life. i also thought about the precious gift of beauty we art teachers are able to share with our students and how much it can mean to them in their lives. it really does make such a difference! goosebumps!
i hope you check out some of bell hooks' work -
