Make african "shakearae" (spelling?) musical instruments with beans inside, decorate with ink or paint.

I need some lessons that would involve gourds. Last year the third
graders planted and grew these wonderful gourds in the land lab behind
our school. This fall as fourth graders they picked the gourds and dried
    them out all winter.
Would anyone have any fabulous projects ideas that we could use? The
school here also has a bird sanctuary in the land lab. My initial
thoughts was to create bird houses and feeder to hang in this area. I'm
just not sure if we would need to coat the gourds with something to
    prevent them from rotting.
Do you feel that this is a project that a Cub Scout troop would do
rather than the art teacher? I am so use to relating the lessons to a
cultural or artist that I feel the project is "week".
Let me know how you feel
        Shari (Ohio)
