I just found out that I'll probably be teaching a crafts class for 6th and
7th graders. (This is in addition to Art Foundations for 5th and 6th
graders and Art I, II, III and IV--small private school, go figure!)
I'm trying to develop a sensible course outline that would be appropriate
for students of this age. I plan to include papermaking and papier-mache,
I'd also love to make pine needle baskets (ala Bunki!), and I might also do
copper enameling.
What are some other crafty things that you would recommend for a year-long
class? I'm trying (first) to consider what I know how to do and what
materials we have (or that could be purchased inexpensively).
There is some *old* silkscreening stuff in storage but I don't (at this
point) have the first clue as to how to do that.
While there's a kiln, it's still not in an area where I can use it--if I can
steamroll anything through over the summer regarding getting it moved and
vented, that would allow clay to be an option, too.
I know that some craft classes do tile mosaics, but we don't have any of the
supplies for that, so I'm not sure if it would be wise to get into that.
What sort of "units" would you suggest or are you doing with your kids? Is
there some logical sequence that should be followed?
Thanks for your help!
