Something that I like to do is sit the kids in a circle around the model and
have them start a gesture drawing.
After 15 sec or so, yell switch and have all the students move one seat to
the left (or right ), and then take up the drawing where the last student
left off. I find this does a couple of things. It breaks that fragile
attitude that art is sacred. It makes kids openly comment on other's art
work. It allows the students to see a diferent view through another artists
eyes. It makes the students make critical judgement on anothers work and
presents a problem solving situation for them to expand upon. Peer
Counseling, Group work, exposure to different styles, etc. and it's also fun
after the students warm up to the idea. You have to move beyond gesture in
order to have many kids work on a number of pieces, but the results are
interesting to both the teacher and student.
Has anyone else tried this?
Let me know what you think......
regards
Kevin
